What Bitrate Should You Use When Converting YouTube to MP3?

📅 March 8, 2024

When you convert a YouTube video to MP3, one of the most important choices is the audio bitrate. VidGrab offers 128kbps, 192kbps, and 320kbps. But what do these numbers mean, and which should you choose?

What is Bitrate?

Bitrate measures how much audio data is encoded per second. A higher bitrate means more data, which generally results in better audio quality but a larger file size.

128kbps – Standard Quality

128kbps is perfectly acceptable for casual listening, especially through phone speakers or earbuds. If you're downloading hundreds of songs and storage space is a concern, 128kbps is a reasonable choice. File sizes are typically 1MB per minute of audio.

192kbps – High Quality

192kbps is a sweet spot that most listeners find indistinguishable from higher quality. It's the right choice for regular headphone listening and home speakers. Files are about 1.5MB per minute.

320kbps – Best Quality

320kbps is the highest standard MP3 bitrate and is considered "near-CD quality." It's best for audiophiles, professional use, or listening on high-end speakers. Files are about 2.4MB per minute.

Important Note About Source Quality

Keep in mind that audio on YouTube is typically compressed to 128kbps–192kbps. Choosing 320kbps won't add quality that wasn't in the original – it just stores the existing quality at a higher bitrate. For most YouTube content, 192kbps is the sweet spot.

Our Recommendation

  • Podcasts / speech: 128kbps is fine
  • Music for everyday listening: 192kbps
  • High-quality music / archiving: 320kbps
